The Revolutionary Left Party in Syria is monitoring the strikes and labor movements currently underway in a number of industrial facilities in Rural Damascus, including the Zenobia and Madar factories, among other workplaces that have witnessed such activities over the past weeks. Labor strikes have erupted, in which hundreds of workers (men and women) have participated in protest against low wages, deteriorating working conditions, and the continuous decline in the living standards of workers and their families.
The importance of these strikes does not lie solely in the immediate demands raised by the workers, but in the fact that they tangibly reflect the escalating social contradictions that the country has been living through since the fall of the Assad regime and the transfer of power to the ruling “Thermidorian” authority. These strikes confirm that the working class is reclaiming its militancy and independence, which had been dormant for decades under the shadow of the Assad family dictatorship, especially after a decade and a half of war that was destructive to the people and the country’s infrastructure.
After more than a year since the authority of the remnants of Al-Qaeda and ISIS came to power, the living conditions of workers (men and women) have worsened. The neoliberal policies of the Thermidorian authority have exacerbated, unleashing the market, profitability, privatization, and restructuring, while continuing to load the costs of these savage policies onto workers and the toiling masses, all while the positions of new segments of the local bourgeoisie associated with the new authority are being consolidated.
What is happening today in workplaces is not merely a dispute over wages or incentives, but a direct expression of the conflict between labor and capital, between the actual producers of wealth and the forces that monopolize control over the means of production and wealth, redistributing them in a way that serves their class interests.
The ongoing strikes in Rural Damascus gain special importance because they break the state of silence that successive regimes have imposed on the working class for long decades. For the strike is not just a tool for demands, but one of the most important forms of organization and collective defense of the class interests of workers.
However, experience confirms, at the same time, that fragmented struggles, no matter how important they are, weaken the ability of the working class to confront the policies of the authority and the owners of capital if they remain isolated from one another. Therefore, the task posed today is to recognize that the strike, whatever its form, is a militant school for the working class. It emphasizes the necessity of working to build an independent labor movement capable of uniting the various pockets of labor struggle in the country.
The Revolutionary Left Party calls for the formation of independent labor committees in workplaces, and for the construction of solidarity and coordination networks between workers in various sectors, leading to the construction of independent labor unions that include workers in industry, transport, services, as well as the public and private sectors, and which defend common demands based on:
- Raising wages and linking them to price levels and the cost of living.
- Full recognition of the right to independent union organization, and the right to demonstrate, strike, and express oneself freely and independently.
- Halting mass layoff policies, reinstating those who were dismissed, forming unions for the unemployed, and building solidarity networks for them.
- The struggle against the authority’s policies of privatization and the transfer of public property to private capital.
- Defending the local productive sector in the face of foreign capital and ensuring health insurance for workers (men and women).
The current strikes are not a passing event, but an indicator of the return of the Syrian working class to the arena of social and political struggle after long years of repression and fragmentation. They raise once again the question that the Thermidorian authority and economic elites try to escape from: The working class and the toiling masses are the ones who produce wealth and goods.
We affirm that the labor struggle for wages and rights is inseparable from the struggle for social liberation and the end of all forms of exploitation and class control.
No political liberation without social liberation.Long live the rising struggle of workers and the toiling masses in Syria. All power and wealth to the people.Glory to the struggles of workers (men and women).
